Extrapair paternities (EPP) are relatively common in passerines, but rare in seabirds. Like most seabirds, albatrosses are long lived, form long-term pair bonds and require biparental care for chick-rearing. Microsatellite analyses of 327 chicks from black-browed Thalassarche melanophris , grey-headed T. chrysostoma and wandering albatrosses Diomedea exulans over two breeding seasons revealed the presence of EPP in all three species. Though EPP rates varied between species and years, up to 21% of offspring were the result of extrapair matings. Rates were highest in wandering albatrosses (6–21%) followed by grey-headed (3–10%) and black-browed (0–9%) albatrosses. EPP rates were lower in 1998 compared to 1999 in both black-browed and grey-headed albatrosses, whereas the reverse was true for wandering albatrosses. Interspecific differences in EPP rates may reflect differences in breeding phenology and sexual size dimorphism. Differences in timing and frequency of breeding may promote different opportunities for interactions with birds other than their normal partner. The different breeding habitat, dispersion and mate-attraction rituals in wandering albatross, together with the disparity in size between the sexes may also offer more scope for higher rates of EPP. Despite extensive sampling within each colony, we were unable to identify sires for many of the extrapair young; however males from other colonies were involved, raising interesting questions regarding the timing and nature of such events.  相似文献

Exposure of etiolated pea (Pisum sativum L. var. Alaska) subapical sections to ethylene disrupts normal polar cell expansion, but fresh weight increase is little affected and the tissue expands radially, swelling. Ethylene has no effect on gross ribonucleic acid metabolism before or during the period when swelling occurs, but incorporation of 14C-proline and leucine into wall-associated protein is markedly inhibited after an initial 3-hour lag period which precedes swelling. Ethylene affects the composition of this protein, altering the proline-hydroxyproline ratio. The gas also alters the optical birefringence pattern of the cell wall, indicating that the cellulose microfibrillar orientation has been changed.  相似文献

Ethylene and supraoptimal levels of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid inhibit the growth of the apical hook region of etiolated Pisum sativum (var. Alaska) seedlings by stopping almost all cell divisions. Cells are prevented from entering prophase. The hormones also retard cell division in intact root tips and completely stop the process in lateral buds. The latter inhibition is reversed partially by benzyl adenine. In root tips and the stem plumular and subhook regions, ethylene inhibits DNA synthesis. The magnitude of this inhibition is correlated with the degree of repression of cell division in meristematic tissue, suggesting that the effect on cell division results from a lack of DNA synthesis. Ethylene inhibits cell division within a few hours with a dose-response curve similar to that for most other actions of the gas. Experiments with seedlings grown under hypobaric conditions suggest that the gas naturally controls plumular expansion and cell division in the apical region.  相似文献

Brief exposure of etiolated pea (Pisum sativum cv. Alaska) seedlings to red light enhances subsequent development of geotropic curvature of the stem. Both this response and inhibition of ethylene production by red light become maximal 8 hours after illumination. Very low concentrations of applied ethylene inhibit development of geotropic curvature, whereas hypobaric treatment enhances geotropic sensitivity by removing endogenous ethylene. Increased geotropic sensitivity after illumination is accompanied by increased lateral migration of 3H-indoleacetic acid in response to gravity, and ethylene inhibits this lateral migration. It is suggested, therefore, that red light-enhanced geotropic sensitivity is caused by increased lateral auxin transport resulting from a reduction in ethylene production after illumination.  相似文献

Isolated cortical collecting tubules from rabbit kidney were studied during perfusion with solutions made either isotonic or hypotonic to the external bathing medium. Examination of living tubules revealed a reversible increase in thickness of the cellular layer, prominence of lateral cell membranes, and formation of intracellular vacuoles during periods of vasopressin-induced osmotic water transport. Examination in the electron microscope revealed that vasopressin induced no changes in cell structure in collecting tubules in the absence of an osmotic difference and significant bulk water flow across the tubule wall. In contrast, tubules fixed during vasopressin-induced periods of high osmotic water transport showed prominent dilatation of lateral intercellular spaces, bulging of apical cell membranes into the tubular lumen, and formation of intracellular vacuoles. It is concluded that the ultrastructural changes are secondary to transepithelial bulk water flow and not to a direct effect of vasopressin on the cells, and that vasopressin induces osmotic flow by increasing water permeability of the luminal cell membrane. The lateral intercellular spaces may be part of the pathway for osmotically induced transepithelial bulk water flow.  相似文献

Summary Synthesis of anthocyanin pigments in etiolated cabbage seedlings is influenced by ethylene at concentrations higher than 10 ppb, and etiolated seedlings produce sufficient ethylene to influence their anthocyanin synthesis. When escape of endogenous ethylene from this tissue is enhanced by means of hypobaric treatment, anthocyanin synthesis is accelerated. Stimulation of anthocyanin synthesis by brief red illumination is completely prevented by applied ethylene and indoleacetic acid inhibits anthocyanin synthesis by stimulating ethylene production. Red light reduces endogenous as well as auxin-induced ethylene production and there is a close correlation between light-induced inhibition of ethylene synthesis and stimulation of anthocyanin formation. We suggest that in part photo-induced anthocyanin synthesis is due to a lowered ethylene content in light-treated tissue.  相似文献

Given the rarity of hybridization in seabirds, which presumably relates to their very high philopatry, the degree of breeding‐site vagrancy should correspond with the incidence of mixed‐species pairing, although not necessarily with the production of hybrids if there are behavioural or genetic barriers to successful reproduction. Using molecular methods, we verified that two of the three chicks hatched by a vagrant male White‐capped Albatross Thalassarche steadi paired with a female Black‐browed Albatross Thalassarche melanophris at South Georgia were genuine hybrids (these chicks died before fledging, but a third chick – the result of an extra‐pair copulation – fledged successfully). In a wider review, we could find only five known or suspected mixed‐species pairs, and three different hybrids in albatrosses, mostly between closely related species. This appears to reflect behavioural barriers to hybridization in sympatric species and the low incidence of breeding‐site vagrancy (which mainly involves single individuals that invariably associate with the most phenotypically similar local taxon). Breeding‐site vagrancy is most frequent in the ‘shy‐albatross’ complex, which could explain why genetic divergence occurred more recently in this group than in other Thalassarche, and hence exploratory behaviour appears to be more important than numerical abundance or breeding distribution in driving colonization as well as hybridization processes in albatrosses.  相似文献
